Discovery Park
multi-generational play | skate park | rezoned land use
More Play, Less Retail
Originally zoned for commercial space this site was ultimately designed for a neighborhood park, although elements of the park were based on community park design concepts. This change in site use required amending the previously approved Outline Development Plan. We worked with the Parks Department and City Council, participating in numerous Council meetings, and facilitating study sessions, and public meetings. Three concepts were presented and the final plan was approved by the Council. During the construction document phase, the project completed the Final Development Plan process as well.
The park is located along a major thoroughfare so our design focused on providing a quiet and safe play area. We used a series of streetscape plantings, landscaped beds, and estate fencing to buffer the park from the busy street.
Site features include:
Grass multi-use field
Amphitheater
Natural water play area (that also incorporates existing irrigation water)
Restroom and large shade shelter
Themed looped trails with custom designed signs and mile markers
Wayfinding markers along regional bike trail
Three age-separated play areas
Custom climbing wall
12,000 square-foot skate park
